Pastel Error: Error Code 20. Pervasive engine is not running or is not licensed.

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Description of error:

When opening Pastel – Error Code 20. Your Pervasive engine is not running or is not licensed.

Pastel version: Pastel Partner/Xpress

Pervasive version: Pervasive Workgroup (let us know if we should do a post on Pervasive Client Server)

Operating system: All

Pervasive is not running due to:

1. The Pervasive engine is not started
2. Pervasive is not licensed
3. Insufficient user rights
4. Anti-virus/firewall is blocking Pervasive
5. There is more than one version of Pervasive installed on the same machine or the installation is damaged and needs to be reinstalled

Step-by-step solution:

1. The Pervasive engine is not started:

To check if the engine is started:

> On the taskbar next to the time (normally in the bottom right hand corner) hover over the small icons until you find the PERVASIVE DATABASE icon.
> If this icon displays with a green dot it means Pervasive is running.
> If this icon displays with a red dot or is not there at all it means that the engine is not started or did not start properly.

To stop and start Pervasive do the following:

> Click on START
> Click on ALL PROGRAMS
> Click on PERVASIVE
> Click on ENGINES
> Click on STOP ENGINE
> Click on START
> Click on ALL PROGRAMS
> Click on PERVASIVE
> Click on ENGINES
> Click on START ENGINE

Reopen Pastel. If you are still getting Error code 20, move on to point 2.

2. Pervasive is not licensed:

To check Pervasive’s license:

> Click on START
> Click on ALL PROGRAMS
> Click on PERVASIVE
> Click on UTILITIES
> Click on LICENSE ADMINISTRATOR

There should be a permanent license in the license administrator for the version of Pervasive that is installed.

If this is not the case, it is normally the result of the incorrect version of Pervasive that is installed. To find out what version of Pervasive should be on the system, phone Pastel or your Pastel dealer with your base serial number. They will provide you with details of the Pervasive version that you should be running.

To check the version currently installed on the system:

> Click on START
> Click on CONTROL PANEL
> Double click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
> From the list of installed applications you will be able to check the version of Pervasive that is installed.

If you find that the incorrect version of Pervasive is installed, it will have to be removed so that the correct version can be installed.

If the correct version is installed and there is no permanent license, open Pastel and register, which will automatically license Pervasive with the correct user count.

Reopen Pastel. If you are still getting Error code 20, move on to point 3.

3. Insufficient user rights:

Pervasive requires certain access levels so that it is able to run and utilize the necessary Windows components. When running Pervasive on a peer-to-peer network the users need full administrator access or at least power user access on the local machine.

Reopen Pastel. If you are still getting Error code 20, move on to point 4.

4. Anti-virus/firewall is blocking Pervasive:

To check if the anti-virus is blocking Pervasive:

> Click on START
> Click on ALL PROGRAMS
> Click on ACCESORIES
> Click on COMMAND PROMPT
> In the black screen that opens, type “netstat –an” (without the inverted commas and remember the space)
> A list of ports that are working on the computer will display. Scroll up the list and look for the ports 1583 and 3351. Both should be in a LISTENING state. If they are not, they are being blocked.

To unblock Pervasive, check the settings in your anti-virus and/or the Windows Firewall and set Pervasive as an exception.

Reopen Pastel. If you are still getting Error code 20, move on to point 5.

5. There is more than one version of Pervasive installed on the same machine or the installation is damaged and needs to be reinstalled:

Completely remove all Pervasive programs and reinstall only the version that should be on the computer.

Pastel should now open without any errors. If Error code 20 persists, Log a query and we will contact you if you are still struggling with this pastel error.
